Realigning the Engine: The Founding Intent of Orbital Sound Studios

Let's start with the current state of independent film, literature, and music. If your in one of these catagories, it must be acknowleged just how hard it is for standalone indie products to survive without structural backing.

As indepentent creators, the spark is in our passion. As a founder, I can relate the exact moment of realization that made me think "I need to build this!"

It was in a bookstore, and I was just browsing until my attention was caught by a slim paperback on how to start a record label. The idea intrigued me. Flipping through the pages brought about a visceral, passionate urge not only to purchase the book, but also to embark upon a two year study of the recording industry soaking up every aspect of the independent label scene. Twenty-four months later, I had a comprehensive business plan, DBA licence, an $800 tower computer and a Digidesign 002 Mixer with Pro Tools 5. The seller even threw in a Samson microphone to sweeten the deal.

I signed my first indie artist, and the single charted to the number twenty spot on the MP3 platform. That was then - fast forward.

The label gave way to recording studio work and it was around this period of realignment that I began thinking about the architecture behind the idea of just being an artist. Frim the beginning, I realized that there were only four core pillers that drove my artistic imagination. Four things that facinated me; music, film, books & games.

In the meantime, I had always loved learning, reading, studying, and began applying these traits into my studio workflows. At times, I was accused of being a perfectionist, but argued that I was in effect pursuing professionalism. During this time, I realized how I could house my four intrests under one roof. I can explain it this way; a screenplay can become the blueprint for a novel. Music can become the soundtrack for the film. A book can be the subject of a game. All of it could work seamlessly together. An idea shouldn't just be a book or a film - an idea should be free to cross over seamlessly within a future Orbital Sound ecosystem.

This four piller idea inspired me to come up with the name Orbital Sound. I did a quick search on the internet at the time for the keywords and there were only two matches. One was a London operation and the other was how music reviewers described an electronic band's music. Scroll past those two listings, and all you got was an endless display of orbital sander tools.

As I am writing this, the journey has closed the loop. What began as an idea is coming into its own. With each passing day, each milestone on the path to this realignment of that first step is gaining traction, attracting attention and producing results. I'll close by adressing the global comunity of creators and audience members.
